From Pirates to Pumpkins to Elf Hats: Why Seasonal Fun Runs Keep Me Moving

Each fall, as routines settle and life speeds up, I look for ways to keep movement joyful—playful, community-driven, and something my family and I can truly look forward to. The Big Pirate Run has become a yearly tradition for us, and this year I jumped into the Halloween Run as well. With the Big Elf Run just around the corner, I’m reminded why I love the Big Fun Run Series so much: they’ve built a welcoming, inclusive community where movement feels fun, accessible, and rooted in connection. Their events bring people together in the best way—through costumes, laughter, and the simple joy of showing up.
The Big Pirate Run: Where Play Meets Purpose
The Pirate Run at Gary Point is always a highlight of the fall, and 2024 was no exception. The event sold out, thanks to the sunshine, the laughter, and the incredible families who show up ready to embrace the fun—foam swords and all.
Yes, I wear the full costume. Yes, I lead a warm-up dressed as a pirate. And yes, my family is always slightly embarrassed but fully participating.
There’s something magical about watching kids and adults alike forget about pace and perfection and simply move, together. As I shared recently in the Richmond Sentinel:
“In a culture where fitness is intertwined with metrics and performance, it’s easy to forget that movement can be playful, imperfect, and—dare I say—fun. When we let go of expectations and invite joyful, low-pressure physical activity, something shifts.”
This event also carries a deeper purpose: proceeds support the Richmond Food Bank Society, helping families in our own community. A reminder that movement can be more than personal—it can be impactful.
The Halloween Run: A Spooky Seawall Celebration
Just when I thought the fun couldn’t continue, the Halloween Run kept the momentum going. The seawall at Olympic Village was packed with runners, walkers, families, and costumes ranging from spooky to downright hilarious. I loved seeing people embrace the moment, lean into creativity, and move simply because it feels good.
There’s something special about seasonal runs—they anchor us. They give us permission to play. And they create memories that linger long after the finish line.
The Big Halloween Run Party segment is now live with NovusCC, capturing all the spooky, sweaty, and seriously fun vibes. A huge thank-you to @wadestagramm for bringing the energy to life (including my full Hulkamania moment!).
